Port of Douglas

Cascade Valley Wine Country is supported by the Ports of Chelan and Douglas County.

Port funding assists our marketing efforts, putting Cascade Valley Wine Country on the map of Washington's premiere wine regions. The contributions from the Port of Chelan County and the Port of Douglas County are instrumental in the burgeoning growth of our industry and the area wineries are grateful for their generous and continuing support.

An incredible business environment.

In 2002 the Chelan County Port District, in conjunction with the Washington State Department of Commerce, conducted an extensive feasibility study of the wine grape and wine making industry in the Lake Chelan area. This study showed the way for continued grape growing and wine making development throughout the Cascade Valley.

In addition, the Chelan and Douglas County Ports efforts have helped stimulate economic, environmental and social prosperity for businesses, residents and visitors alike throughout the area. Their "can-do" spirit and commitment to the economic development of the area--not only in the form of tourism and destination marketing activities--but also airport improvements, technology centers and so much more is a driving force in the area's continued success.

About Washington's port districts.

Since 1911, the State of Washington has allowed local voters to create port districts to carry out economic development activities. The first public ports, such as Seattle and Grays Harbor, were dedicated to traditional marine enterprises. In 1955, recognizing that port purposes could be achieved through other activities, including airports and industrial development, the law was amended to create non-marine port districts, such as Chelan and Douglas County. Both counties voters approved to create port districts in 1958.

The law was further amended in 1984 to authorize promotion of trade and tourism for economic development, such as this partnership with the Cascade Valley Wine Country.
